Our staff have many years of experience in providing Orthodontic care for adults and children.

Our orthodontist and practice principal, Dr Lynelle Mordue, is supported by an orthodontic therapist, nurses and a reception team who look after patients from Harpenden and the surrounding Hertfordshire villages. You will get to know all of them over the course of your treatment.

Answers to the things patients ask us most often.

Do I need a referral from my dentist to see an orthodontist?

For a private consultation you can contact us directly, no referral is needed. NHS orthodontic treatment for eligible children is normally arranged through a referral and assessment from your own dentist. If you are unsure, please call us on 01582 769955 and we will talk you through it.

Can adults have braces?

Yes. We treat adults of all ages at our Harpenden practice. Provided your teeth and gums are healthy, there is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. Many of our adult patients choose discreet options such as Invisalign clear aligners or clear ceramic braces.

Is NHS orthodontic treatment available?

We provide NHS orthodontic treatment for eligible children up to 18 years of age. NHS eligibility is based on a national assessment of clinical need, so not every child will qualify. Affordable private treatment is available for children who are not eligible and for adults.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment time depends on how much movement your teeth need. Straightforward cases can take under a year, while more complex cases often take around 18 to 24 months. You will be given a personal estimate at your consultation, along with how often you will need to be seen.

Do braces hurt?

Having braces fitted does not hurt. Teeth often feel tender for a few days afterwards and again after adjustments, which most people manage comfortably with soft foods and their usual pain relief. Our Braces Care pages explain what to expect before, during and after treatment.

Will I need impressions or moulds of my teeth?

No. We use the latest digital scanning technology, so patients no longer need to undergo messy and uncomfortable impressions. A handheld scanner builds an accurate 3D model of your teeth in a few minutes.

Will I need a retainer after my braces come off?

Yes. Teeth naturally tend to move throughout life, so retainers are an essential part of every course of treatment. We will explain which retainers suit you and how to look after them on our Braces Aftercare page.

How much do braces cost?

The cost depends on which appliance you have and how long treatment takes, so we give you a written figure after your consultation rather than a guess over the phone. Our fees page sets out our current charges. NHS treatment is free for eligible children up to 18.
